{"id":377,"date":"2008-06-12T17:26:33","date_gmt":"2008-06-12T17:26:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.doctorross.co.za\/?p=377"},"modified":"2008-06-12T17:26:33","modified_gmt":"2008-06-12T17:26:33","slug":"exhibition-of-antarctic-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doctorross.co.za\/?p=377","title":{"rendered":"Exhibition of Antarctic Art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Antarctic expeditions since the days of the epic explorers have focussed on science, but also carry a strong creative tradition.\u00c2\u00a0 The literary works of the likes of Scott and Cherry-Garrard are well known, and the artistic contributions of their compatriots such as Dr Wilson should be equally famous.\u00c2\u00a0 Before the ubiquitous use of photography, much of the scientific recording of the environment and animal life of Antarctica was achieved through the talented artwork of her explorers.\u00c2\u00a0 To continue this tradition, many contemporary expeditions include writers, journalists, photographers and artists, with the task of bringing all the emotive aspects of Antarctica back to the common man.<\/p>\n<p>During the 2007\/8 summer expedition and takeover, we were privileged to have Mrs Nerina de Villers as Artist-in-Residence.\u00c2\u00a0 Nerina travelled to Antarctica with us aboard the SA Agulhas, and stayed at the base during the summer before retuning to South Africa.\u00c2\u00a0 During this time she painted several original works (including the one in the picture below, which is now mine, my precioussssss&#8230;.) and collected hundreds of photographs and sketches for future works.\u00c2\u00a0 This has included a mural at the DEAT A&amp;I headquarters in Cape Town, and a large painting for the galley of the Agulhas.\u00c2\u00a0 She also donated a beautiful painting of Knotten to SANAE IV.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctorross.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/nerinadv.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-378\" title=\"Nerina de Villiers painting at SANAE IV\" src=\"http:\/\/www.doctorross.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/nerinadv.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"359\" srcset=\"https:\/\/doctorross.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/nerinadv.jpg 640w, https:\/\/doctorross.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/nerinadv-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nerina will be hosting an exhibition of her work at the SANAP headquarters in Cape Town next week.\u00c2\u00a0 Interested members of the public are welcome to attend this event.\u00c2\u00a0 I believe it is free and open to all.\u00c2\u00a0 The details are:<\/p>\n<p>Date:\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Friday, 20 June 2008<\/p>\n<p>Time:\u00c2\u00a0 17h00 (SAST)<\/p>\n<p>Venue:\u00c2\u00a0 DEAT Antarctica &amp;
